The History of Unlimited Hydroplane racing on Lake Chelan

So how does a small town with a population of about 2,500 people at the time, get on the world stage by hosting a national Gold Cup unlimited hydroplane race?? From 1957 to 1960 the small town of Chelan did just that on its beautiful 55 mile long Lake Chelan!!

City fathers such as Jim Lafferty and Norm Evans convinced some of the major players in Seattle and local leaders that Lake Chelan could host a gold cup event. Norm Evans helped on the Seattle based Slo-Mo-Shun IV boat that won the 1956 Gold Cup and also drove for multiple Sponsors. He won in 1958 and was 2nd in the1960 race during the Lake Chelan events!!!
